Shakers n’ Bakers – Mother Ann’s Day Tour 2007

The Shakers n’ Bakers is a band made up of leading improvisers on the New York jazz/new music scene who perform reinterpretations of Shaker “vision” songs, received in states of inspiration by young women of the Shaker religious community during the years 1837-50. The group will be performing three special concerts this summer at sites of historical significance to the Shaker movement. The band’s tour will roughly retrace some of the travels of the founder of the Shaker movement in America, Mother Ann Lee, on the occasion of the celebration of the 233rd anniversary of her arrival in the United States from England.

On Friday August 3 the group will perform at the 1848 meetinghouse at Watervliet Shaker Village in Albany, NY at 8pm. This event is sponsored by the Shaker Heritage society (www.shakerheritage.org). little (i) music announces innagural releases for Fall 2006!

little (i) music is a new label presenting creative music with a spiritual narrative. The first two releases are Shakers n’ Bakers and The Blue Guitar and will available this fall . Shakers n’ Bakers is the first recording by the group which performs “Vision” songs, pieces received in states of inspiration by members of the Shaker religious sect during the period of 1830-1850 (informed by the sounds of Ayler and Lennon) and is co-produced by Jeff Lederer and Jamie Saft. The Blue Guitar is Mary LaRose’s avante-rootsy tribute to songs sung by her father and features the guitar of Marc Ribot and Steve Bernstein on slide trumpet. Both recordings speak a language that freely moves through the worlds of free jazz and anthem rock, and are united in their underlying vision of spirit in sound.
